Valentine’s Day: Don’t Look for Love, Look for Coffee {Sweatshop Coffee}

In December I was in NYC, and I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn I visited many coffee shops. I was staying in the West Village, so most of the coffee shops I checked out (or re-checked out) – including Laughing Man, Everyman Espresso, Birch, Ninth Street Espresso, and Ground Support (my favorite because of the coffee) – were in Manhattan. But there was one coffee shop in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) – Sweatshop coffee shop – I was determined to get to on this trip. The reason: I needed to see – in “real life” – Timothy Goodman’s graphic art “DONT LOOK…

Places to Drink Coffee in Los Angeles: Starbucks Reserve (Yes, Starbucks)

Several years go, I had the idea for a “better” version of Starbucks. Think of a kind of Lexus version of an everyday Starbucks – good and steady like a Toyota – but more luxurious and better designed. At the time, I was pretty happy with the coffee Starbucks Toyota was serving, and so my idea was that these Starbucks Lexus stores would be exactly like a Starbucks Toyota…just with better pastries. 🙂 I know, very innovative. I mention this because, once a week on the way to class, I would drive down San Vicente and would always see the Hermanos Coffee sign. And I would think “That is a great sign. Why haven’t I heard about Hermanos Coffee…? I need to check it out,” and then I would…

This video of former Pro BMXer Kevin Porter is SO AWESOME… and, yes, this has to do with coffee.

This is Kevin Porter. He is a former Pro-BMXer. If you click through (on the title above) to this post, you will see a video of him doing his BMX thing. Do yourself a favor and watch the whole video. The whole entire video. Note: the beginning is pretty funny, but that is not the best part… hang in there… it’s pretty f*ckin’ rad. I didn’t know I even liked BMX… or that I used the word rad… until I saw this video. It is so cool! Just like Kevin. I met Kevin at the Verve…

Five Cool (and Fun!) Ways Minimize Your Environmental Footprint This Summer

My friend Jen Kanter is co-founder of barrio.la, a company that sources and promotes local businesses that produce high-quality, eco-friendly goods made in Southern California. Jen and her brother Ricky founded barrio.la to make it easy for people to find beautifully-made, unique products, while having a positive impact on their community and environment.

I’ve known Jen for a while now, and one thing that has always struck me about her is that she makes a real effort to have a positive impact on our environment.
