Places to Drink Coffee in Los Angeles: Melrose Umbrella Company

First opened as a speakeasy, Melrose Umbrella Company was originally conceived as a place to have just a really good cocktail. The design of the space has the feel of something like an early 1900s pharmacy or feed store. The bar’s motto: Those who weren’t hung as horse thieves, died of drink. On a side note, I’m gonna assume the use of hung in that sentence was intentional. Very funny (words matter). Anyway, about a year ago, Melrose Umbrella Co. added a coffee program to its offerings, opening during the day for people to come drink some…

Places to Drink Coffee in Los Angeles: Starbucks Reserve (Yes, Starbucks)

Several years go, I had the idea for a “better” version of Starbucks. Think of a kind of Lexus version of an everyday Starbucks – good and steady like a Toyota – but more luxurious and better designed. At the time, I was pretty happy with the coffee Starbucks Toyota was serving, and so my idea was that these Starbucks Lexus stores would be exactly like a Starbucks Toyota…just with better pastries. 🙂 I know, very innovative. I thought Starbucks could call these stores Starbucks Gold. I even emailed them at one point to share this great idea so they would have…

Places to Drink Coffee in Los Angeles (Mid-City): Hermanos Coffee

From November 2015 until September 2016, I was taking improv classes once a week at the Improv for the People studio in Culver City. I loved taking those classes – it is an amazing, life-changing experience on many levels which I will write about in another post. I mention this because, once a week on the way to class, I would drive down San Vicente and would always see the Hermanos Coffee sign. And I would think “That is a great sign. Why haven’t I heard about Hermanos Coffee…? I need to check it out,” and then I would…

This video of former Pro BMXer Kevin Porter is SO AWESOME… and, yes, this has to do with coffee.

This is Kevin Porter. He is a former Pro-BMXer. If you click through (on the title above) to this post, you will see a video of him doing his BMX thing. Do yourself a favor and watch the whole video. The whole entire video. Note: the beginning is pretty funny, but that is not the best part… hang in there… it’s pretty f*ckin’ rad. I didn’t know I even liked BMX… or that I used the word rad… until I saw this video. It is so cool! Just like Kevin. I met Kevin at the Verve…

The Ask Challenge… or how to have the best chance of getting what you want

Last month, I travelled to the East Coast for a friend’s wedding. On the morning I was headed to the airport, I had convinced myself that 45 minutes would be enough time to shower, wash/dry my hair, change the sheets on my bed, water my plants, and wash the dishes. It was total madness. There was no way in hell I was getting any of that done in less than an hour and half, and even though I cut every corner I could, and I still was late leaving for the airport.

That was the first in series…
